The Baby Gumboot Guide: Waterproof Shoes for Little Walkers
When your baby starts to take those exciting first steps, choosing the right shoes becomes more than just a fashion decision—it’s a crucial step in supporting their growing body.
Pre-walker shoes, also known as early walker or first walker shoes, are essential to healthy baby and toddler foot development. Lightweight and designed to mimic the natural movements of the foot, pre-walker shoes help babies to strengthen their feet, improve balance, and develop essential motor skills.
However, when it comes to protecting their teeny toes in cold or wet weather, there are not a lot of good options out there for parents. In order to find the right pre-walker wet weather shoe, let’s dive into what elements that shoe needs.
First up, understanding early foot development in babies. Babies’ feet are soft and malleable when they begin walking, while the foot structure is still forming. During these early stages of walking, babies are:
- Strengthening their muscles
- Learning balance and coordination
- Developing their bones – so much growth, so fast!
In order to support early walking, their shoes need to do three main things:
- Enable free movement
- Provide sensory feedback
- Provide protection for feet
To allow for all these things, podiatrists recommend soft-soled, flexible shoes. Let’s look next at why soft-soled shoes are the go-to for early walkers.
- Enabling free movement:
o Soft-soled shoes allow babies the freedom to move their feet freely, flexing and gripping the ground, just as they would if they were barefoot.
o The wide toe box in soft soled shoes allows babies to splay their toes wide inside the shoe. The ability to toe splay is vita in developing balance and stability.
- Providing sensory feedback:
o Being able to feel the ground underneath a soft sole allows babies to learn balance and coordination, by adjusting their movements in response to stimulus like gradients and obstacles.
- Provide protection for the foot:
o Soft-soled shoes have enough coverage and structure in their design to both cover and insulate the foot, providing protection against objects, UV and the elements

Getting the balance right between barefoot and shoes right is tricky. Soft-soled shoes that are too stiff will restrict movement and feedback, but do provide greater protection for the feet. Soft-soled shoes that are too soft provide great free movement and feedback, but don’t offer much protection.
Testing out a soft-soled shoe in person can be a good way to discover if the balance is right for your child. If the shoe can easily fold between the fingers, but is resistant to being scratched with fingernails, the balance is good.
Now – applying this to a gumboot is interesting! When cold or wet weather approaches, parents and carers head straight for the trusty gumboots, for themselves and their children. Unfortunately, standard rubber gumboots are not even close to ideal for early walkers. Traditional rubber or synthetic gumboots are:
- Heavy
o Traditional gumboots are made from thick rubber, which is often heavy. Early walkers struggle to both lift the boot and move it forward, restricting their natural movements
- Rigid
o The walls of traditional gumboots are often rigid. This restricts the movement of our early walkers’ ankles, reducing their capacity to learn proprioception, balance and coordination.
- Inflexible
o The soles of traditional gumboots have stiff soles, reducing sensory feedback from the ground underneath them to a very low level. Early walkers will struggle to learn to adjust their movement in response to stimuli, in turn reducing their capacity to learn balance and coordination.
- Have a narrow toe box
o A narrow toe box prevents the natural splay of the toes. This will again reduce an early walkers’ ability to learn stability, balance and coordination.
All of these design factors in a traditional gumboot are detrimental to the developing feet of our early walkers.
So, what should parents look for in a toddler-friendly gumboot that can handle cold and wet weather, while still supporting their baby’s development? The ideal gumboot should offer protection from the elements without sacrificing the flexibility and natural movement required for healthy foot growth.
Key features to look for in gumboots for early walkers include:
- Lightweight Construction:
o A good pair of gumboots for babies should be light enough to allow them to walk comfortably without feeling weighed down.
- Flexible Soles:
o Just like soft-soled shoes, flexible soles let your baby’s feet move freely, allowing for natural movement that promotes muscle strengthening and balance.
- Wide Toe Box:
o A wide toe box is essential in early walker shoes, as it gives the toes plenty of room to spread out, improving balance and stability.
- Warm, Soft Interior:
o In colder weather, a soft, cushioned interior provides warmth without compromising comfort. It should be soft against their skin to avoid irritation.
Unicorn gumboots, right?
At Grubbybub, we’ve parents too. And we looked for this baby gumboot unicorn over three consecutive kids, without finding it. What is a parent to do when we’ve considered all of these factors that we need in a pre-walker gumboot, but we can only find traditional gumboots??
Naturally, we made it ourselves.
We call them: GumBooties. And we LOVE them.

Our goal was to create a functional, high-quality outdoor boot, that supports the healthy growth of little feet, without compromising on durability, protection or fun!
What did we build in?
- Lightweight and Flexible
o Our gumbooties are made with lightweight materials, beautifully balanced with light structuring.
- Wide Toe Box
o We design our gumbooties with a wide toe box, ensuring early walkers have room to splay their toes and develop balance, coordination and stability.
- Durable, Waterproof Protection
o While our gumbooties are light and flexible, they don’t compromise on durability. The tough outer layer ensures durability, and the membrane underneath provides waterproofing and protection from the elements.
- Insulating Materials
o Neoprene lined with microfleece provides our early walkers with both insulation and breathability, along with the ability to easily clean the interior of the bootie.
- Developmentally Appropriate Design
o Our boots are engineered to support infant foot development, ensuring that our children can explore the world comfortably, year round, while their feet and bodies grow strong and healthy.
Why Proper Footwear Choices Now Matter for Lifelong Health
The footwear choices you make during your baby’s early years can have long-lasting effects on their foot health. Ill-fitting or poorly designed shoes can lead to issues like flat feet, bunions, or poor posture. By choosing footwear that supports natural movement and foot development, you are investing in your child’s long-term health and comfort.
At Grubbybub, we’re committed to helping parents access playwear that allows children to fully explore the world, safely and comfortably, no matter the weather.
The release of this unicorn GumBootie is coming soon! Keep an eye out in February – the first of it’s kind will be coming to your inbox soon
